A lady got on and sat opposite Haze. That meant she would have the berth under him. She said she thought it was going to snow. She said her husband had driven her down to the station and he said if it didn’t snow before he got home, he’d be surprised. He had ten miles to go; they lived in the suburbs. She was going to Florida to visit her daughter. She had never had time to take a trip that far off. The way things happened, one thing right after another, it seemed like time went by so fast you couldn’t tell if you were old or young. She looked as if it had been cheating her, going double quick when she was asleep and couldn’t watch it. Haze was glad to have someone there talking (CW 754).Aquí su primera novela, Sangre sabia (Wise Blood), en concreto el primer capítulo:
Mrs. Wally Bee Hitchcock (…) said that she thought the early evening like this was the prettiest time of day and she asked him if he didn't think so too. She was a fat woman with pink collars and cuffs and pear-shaped legs that slanted off the train seat and didn’t reach the floor (CW 3).(...) [va a] “Florida, to visit her married daughter, Sarah Lucille. She said it seemed like she had never had time to take a trip that far off. The way things happened, one thing after another, it seemed like time went by so fast you couldn’t tell if you were young or old.He thought he could tell her she was old if she asked him. He stopped listening to her for a while (CW 5).
La señora tiene algunos rasgos de la abuela de Un hombre bueno es difícil de encontrar, que también iba a Florida. Creo que se ve bien el cambio en algunos aspectos. El humor es muy bueno en ambos textos.
