Honestidad brutal

En una carta a Betty Hester FO'C explica sus dudas sobre si decir en una reseña de un libro todo lo que piensa, porque no le convence, con sinceridad brutal:

In the first place you can be so absolutely honest and so absolutely wrong at the same time that I think it is better to be a combination of cautious and polite. I prefer the good manners of an idiot to his honesty and while I am not an idiot in these matters, I have found myself mighty far wrong mighty often. Well, Mauriac says only fiction does not lie and I believe him” (21.04.56 CW 992).
En primer lugar, puedes ser absolutamente sincera y a la vez estar a la vez tan absolutamente equivocada, que creo que es mejor una combinación de cautelosa y cortés. Prefiero las buenas maneras de un idiota a su sinceridad y aunque yo no sea idiota en estas cuestiones, me he descubierto que había metido la pata hasta el fondo demasiadas veces.
